Ahold Delhaize was formed in July 2016 from the merger of Ahold and Delhaize Group, retail innovators for almost 150 years. Our local brands employ around 414,000 associates in around 7,659 local grocery, small format and specialty stores. Ahold Delhaize brands are dedicated to helping customers eat well, save time and live better.
 
In addition to our stores, our brands include the top online retailer in the Benelux and the number one online grocers in the Benelux and the United States. Our local brands are also among the most prominent providers of fresh food and locally tailored own-brand products, including a diverse selection of affordable natural and organic goods.

1867 - Opening of Delhaize in Charleroi
It all started in 1867 when the Delhaize brothers opened a wholesale grocery business in Charleroi, Belgium and chose the lion, the symbol of strength, as their logo.
1887 - Opening of Albert Heijn in Oostzaan
Twenty years later in the Netherlands, Albert Heijn and his wife opened a small grocery store in Oostzaan that would form the roots of Ahold.
1952 - First self-service store supermarket
Innovation has been part of our DNA since the beginning. The Delhaize brothers and Albert Heijn pioneered the use of their own branded products and introduced the concept of self-service, low mark-up shopping to a wider audience.
2016 - Merger Ahold and Delhaize
In 2016, Ahold and Delhaize Group combined forces to become a world-leading food retail group dedicated to helping customers shop anytime, anywhere and in any manner ? in-store and online.
